10 ChatGPT Prompts School Doesn’t Want You to Know About

A new major update to ChatGPT allows it to analyze images, making studying feel almost like cheating. You can now upload any picture and ask the AI questions about it. In this article, I’ll share 10 prompts that can help you take full advantage of this updated version of ChatGPT to supercharge your study process.

Prompt 1: Summarizing Textbook Content

When I’m studying a textbook, like this one on learning and memory, I’ll take a photo of a page or section and ask ChatGPT to summarize it. After reading the summary, I use my iPad to write down everything I remember without looking at the textbook. This technique, called active recall, involves retrieving information from memory and helps reinforce learning. After writing my summary, I send a picture of my notes to ChatGPT and ask it to highlight any details I missed. This way, I know what to focus on next time.

Prompt 2: Identifying Key Information

A lot of textbook content includes unnecessary fluff. To save time, I ask ChatGPT to identify the most important information in a section or page. I then structure my notes around its response, focusing only on the essentials.

Prompt 3: Simplifying Diagrams

If I struggle to understand a diagram, I ask ChatGPT to explain it in simple terms or as if I were a 5-year-old. If it’s still unclear, I ask it to simplify further or provide an analogy to help me grasp the concept. Once I understand the diagram, I ask ChatGPT to create practice questions related to it, which reinforces my comprehension.

Prompt 4: Creating Mnemonics

To remember complex diagrams or concepts, I ask ChatGPT to create a mnemonic device. It’s a simple but effective way to memorize tricky information.

Prompt 5: Generating Active Recall Questions

When reviewing material, I ask ChatGPT to generate active recall questions based on a page or section I’ve just read. I request that the questions focus on the main ideas and are limited to one paragraph each. Instead of asking ChatGPT for the answers, I prefer to refer back to the textbook to check my understanding.

Prompt 6: Using the Cornell Notes System

I ask ChatGPT to format my notes using the Cornell Notes System, which divides the page into three sections: notes on the right, a Q&A section on the left, and a summary at the bottom. I request that each bullet point in the notes corresponds to one paragraph and remains concise. After reviewing ChatGPT’s notes, I generate my own summary and use the Q&A section for self-testing.

Prompt 7: Flashcards in Table Format

For memorization, I ask ChatGPT to create flashcards in a table format. If my textbook has a glossary or key terms section, I snap a photo of it and ask ChatGPT to create flashcards with definitions. If no glossary exists, I can take pictures of the pages and have ChatGPT pull out bolded terms, though this process can be time-consuming. Choosing textbooks with a glossary simplifies this task.

Prompt 8: Creating Practice Tests

After reading a section, I ask ChatGPT to create a test for me, including both multiple-choice and long-form questions. I answer the test questions first and then check my responses against ChatGPT’s answers to enhance active recall and memory retention.

Prompt 9: Clarifying Confusing Text

When I encounter confusing passages, like in my philosophy textbook, I simply take a photo and ask ChatGPT for clarification. It provides a straightforward explanation, helping me understand even the most complicated material.

Prompt 10: Identifying Unknown Objects

Whenever I see something unfamiliar—like a plant, bug, or graffiti—I can take a photo and ask ChatGPT to identify it. This is also useful for studies, allowing me to ask the AI to explain diagrams, equations, or images of people and places.
